Captain David Fairhurst

David has amassed 15000 flying hours through a broad range of the aviation spectrum.

David knows only too well that there are a 1001 pilots out there looking for the elusive contract that offers them the best combination of lifestyle, salary and conditions, as he has been one of them for the last 30+ years.

He trained as a military helicopter pilot with the Australian Navy before heading into civilian life as a freelance helicopter pilot in Sydney flying for Channels 10 and 7, the Westpac Rescue helicopter and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Then David moved to Channel 10 Melbourne to start up a new operation using Sir Reginald Ansett’s former Bell 206. This position eventually led to Ansett Airlines where he remained for 8 years.

He accepted a contract in Malaysia and enjoyed 3 years on the DC10 before returning to Australia briefly in 1994 to fly for a commuter airline. After a year David headed back to Asia to fly the B767 for Vietnam Airlines for 6 years. He then moved to Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services as an IRE/TRE and contract pilot until 2002, when he then decided to accept a contract with a Japanese Airline as a B767 pilot where he still operates today.

As can be seen from David’s experience, he has a very good understanding of what it will take to adjust to life in Asia and to accept the rich variety of cultures that exist there today. He understands the pressures of the contract aviation industry and the has seen the effects on pilots who struggle to accept the differences of the cultures, and the need to realise that often the relationship is as important as the level of piloting skills.
